Blackberry?

I recently damaged my current phone, a Nokia 6220, and have been considering replacements, as it’s just out of Warranty and I didn’t like it that much anyway.

A name that’s come up a lot is Blackberry, they seem to be great phones usability wise, and their great for business purposes (which would be handy to me even if I don’t really run a business), and I actually really like how their designed. pretty

As I don’t really want a full qwerty phone right now, and my hands are a little large for small keys anyway, I was considering buying the Blackberry Pearl, I’m not sure which model yet but the feedback especially for the later models on the internet seems to be very positive, and actually I really like the design.

I’m not 100% on the “reduced qwerty keyboard” it features, but actually I think I could get used to it, I text a huge amount and I can see it being far faster than the current predictive that I use at the moment.

As I’ll get a new phone on my contract about Mid 2010, I don’t see it being worth buying a brand new one, so I was considering a second hand Pearl for use until my new contract phone, at which point I may arrange to have a more recent model if there is one, assuming I like the phone.

I think the only possible downside of buying a Blackberry would be that it’s a primarially business phone, and I use my phone mainly for personal stuff, how well it’d handle however many texts I send a day I don’t know, but I’m planning to give it a try.

Increasing Battery Life on Nokia 6220 Classic

I’ve had a Nokia 6220 Classic for a little while now, since I changed my contract in April, and one thing that’s struck me is the awful battery life. I rarely get more than 12 hours out of mine, and while I’m a heavy user (i send mid range thousands of texts a month), it’s still pretty bad, and my old phone managed better. So I did a bit of digging, and I’ve found a few ways to boost the battery life. It’s still not amazing, but it’s a damn sight better than it was to start with.

The first way is to disable the 3g mode on the phone. I did this, and I found it almost tripled my battery life, from about 12 hours up to a few days. The way to do this is to open up the settings menu, and go to “”Phone Sett” > “Phone” > “Network” > “Network Mode” and switch it to GSM rather than dual mode. It should be noted that customers on the 3 network in the UK should probably not do this, as 3 rely on you using their 3g network, they have to pay to use o2 when you go 2g.

The second way I found was to make sure the minimum number of applications possible are open, this decreases drain too.

Turning off the menu transitions also helps, this can be done by heading too the settings menu again, selecting “Themes” then “General” and pushing Options (left soft key) and selecting “Theme Effects”. I actually disabled this not long after getting my phone, because it got on my nerves.

Turning down the backlight and time to screensaver is also meant to help, but in my experience, it doesn’t seem to make a huge amount of difference.

Phone Gone Back To Nokia

It would appear that I have a bad record with phones, I wreck them very quickly. This one’s only six months old, it’s gone back to Nokia Care to have a vibration issue sorted out. Phone decided that it no longer wanted to vibrate. At all.

Everything seemed pretty good, the people in the call center were British, which makes a nice change, and the guy I got was very helpful. That said, as I tweeted while on the phone, the woman they make you listen to while on hold is gets VERY annoying after about.. two minutes?

I’m now faced with up too 15 days with no phone, which is never good. I’m hoping they get it back to me by Friday, so I have it to start back at college with, but apparently it’s unlikely. I’m borrowing my Mothers lovely Nokia 1600, which is nothing like what I’m used to using, but I guess it does the job.

I really wish Nokia were like Sony Ericsson, who just brought me a new handset to swap for my old one, but apparently that’s not going to happen. Heh.

Nokia Problems

One month in with my phone, and I’ve already run into a decent sized issue. Whenever I push 1 twice on my keypad while texting, the phone restarts. It means I can’t text properly anymore, which is really annoying, considering how much I text. Orange refuse to help, and the Nokia service line is closed. Wonderful.

Update:

I called Nokia a today, and they were very helpful. They ran me through a variety of troubleshooting options, and then helped me through a software update, which cured the bug.

I guess I screwed up the software somewhere or other, that’s the first report of the bug Nokia have had, which means it’s something I did. At least it’s fixed :)
